Nancy J. 4/12 F MissouriNotes from Raydon Alexander:
I got the invalid pension application/rejection papers of Samuel Wintermute Snell. He was a private, and served in "E. 60 E. Mo. Mil." It appears it is Co. E, 60th Regiment, enrolled Missouri Militia. His application was rejected December 17, 1895, on the grounds that "the
organization to which claimant belonged was never mustered into the service of the United States. He has no title to pension." I'm not sure if you know that many pension applicants for the Civil War were denied, really for any reason they could come up with. It was very difficult to get one.
He served from April 12 1862 to December 1, 1862, "57 days actual service." He was discharged at Taborville Mo.
On Sept. 9 1895 he "alleges permanent disability, not due to vicious habits, (but) from Rupture and general debility." The disability did not have to be war related. He was represented by an attorney, E.H. Gelston & Co., of Washington DC. It doesn't seem to have helped.
He was living in Navajoe, Green (also spelled Greer) Co., Oklahoma Territory-- 2 September 1895. He was 66 at the time. His signature appears on the papers. Two people from Altus TX vouched for him, T.G. Braddock and W.R.Morrow.S.W. Snell moved to Erath, Texas, in 1870, where he went into the cattle business. About 1894 he moved his ranching operations to the vicinity of Mountain Park, Now Kiowa Co., Oklahoma.
