James Snell was responsible for developing the first sawmill in Escanaba, Michigan. He had a farm in Decatur, Michigan where Lucille Brubaker (called "Timmy" by "grandpa") stayed for three years. In Decatur, he was known as the "strawberry king".

Howard Snell lived at 567 Vohris Avenue, Gladstone, Michigan. He had a degree as a mining engineer and received a Certificate of Mine Rescue Training, trained in mine-rescue apparatus at the United States Bureau of Mines Rescue Car No. 7 at Houghton, Michigan August 16, 1918, and during training he performed hard labor in noxious and irrespirable gases and gave evidence of being qualified to care for and use rescue apparatus in mines. Howard served in World War I and enlisted July 11, 1918 as a Private Demolition Company E, 160th, Second Battalion, The 27th Regiment of Engineers, United States Army, served in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive Army Troop from October 26, 1918 to November 11, 1918, Chateau-Thierry-Argonne-St. Mihiel, France, actually leaving the United States September 1, 1918 and arriving in the United States March 20, 1919. He was honorably discharged April 2, 1919. This company fought with the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe in the Great War against Germany and its Allies.
The 27th Regiment of Engineers, United States Army, was organized under the provisions of an order from the War Department dated August 15, 1917. This order called for the organization, "for the period of the emergency, the enlisted strength being raised and maintained by voluntary enlistment or draft," of certain special and technical engineer troops, among which was specified a "mining service," consisting of regimental headquarters and six companies. The Regiment was organized and trained as a combatant regiment, for duty in the front lines, its speciality to be military mining, both offensive and defensive. Actually, because of a change in the character and conditions of warfare its most effective work was done in another field, viz., the construction of bridges in the forward areas, in which work the men's experience in heavy-timber construction was invaluable.
