Obituary from The Iron Post, Escanaba, Michigan dated Saturday, December 12, 1908:
YOUNG MAN SHOT
Jay Snell of Masonville Township Mistaken for a Deer and Killed Near Rapid RiverJay Snell, 21 years of age, son of S. S. Snell of Masonville Township, was shot and killed on November 30 while out hunting about twelve miles north east of Rapid River. The fatality took place near Cabries camp. The man who did the shooting was Zeph Labumbard who mistook the young man for a deer. William Morse, a scaler from Cabries camp, was standing by the side of the unfortunate young man, when he was hit and himself narrowly escaped being shot. Labumbard fired several shots in succession, one bullet taking effect in the head and shattering the skull. The young man lived but a few hours and did not regain consciousness. Another version of the shooting is that Labumbard was firing at three deer which were crossing a marsh, and that he was not aware that Snell was on the opposite side of the marsh and in range with his rifle.
