John W. Hastings

1850 Census Osage Twp, Benton Arkansas pg 79 fam 465
John Hastings 25 M TN
Joana 26 F Al
James H. 5 M AR
Malinda A 3 F AR
Mary E. 2 F AR
Alexander Russell 19 M AL
Malinda Russell 23 F AL

At the time of the 1850 census, Joanna's brother Alexander Russell (age 19) and sister Malinda Russell (age 23) were living with them. Her brother, James Russell, and his family were living next door. Carlisle Russell, another brother, is shown on Benton County land records to have acquired 40 acres of land in November, 1854. Since Joanna's parents are not listed on the 1850 census and her brothers and sisters were living either with her or near her at the time of the census, it is possible that the parents died before the census was taken.

Around 1851, John and Joanna moved from Benton County to McDonald County, Missouri, located just to the north and which had been formed from part of Newton County. The remaining six of their nine children were born in McDonald County.

John W. Hastings died in McDonald County in May of 1866 at the age of 41, at which time an administator was appointed for his estate. His estate was finally settled in July of 1874. Mention is made of the sale of the 80 acre family farm which was in Section 9, Township 21, Range 31.

After John's death, Joanna moved back to Benton County. It is possible that the family had earlier moved back and forth between Benton and McDonald Counties. Benton County deed records show that "John W. Hastings of the County of McDonald and state of Missouri" purchased land in Benton County in September of 1863, three years before his death. Daughter Mary Elizabeth married William Dodd in Bentonville, Arkansas on September 12, 1865. In any event, Joanna, at the age of 42, is shown on the 1870 Benton County census living adjacent to Henry and Mary Hastings, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, and to her married daughters with their families, Mary Elizabeth Dodd and Malinda Pitts.

Joanna Hastings is listed on the 1872 Benton County tax records. Mrs. J.M. Hastings is listed for the years 1874, 1875, 1876 and 187. She does not appear on either the 1880 or 1900 Arkansas census. She probably died in Benton County between 1877 and 1880. If so, she would have been about 55 years old.

James H. Hastings

James possibly died before 1860 as he does not appear on that year's census and is not later named as one of his father's heirs.
